Narrative Writing: Adding Sensory Details

Adding sensory details is very important in narrative writing. All good writers help their readers to see and feel what they are reading about. Using sensory details helps your reader to get a better picture in their mind of what you are writing about.

When adding sensory details ask yourself the following questions:

1- What did it look like? What were the colors/size/shape of the objects?
2- What did it feel like? What was the texture?
3- How did it taste? What could I compare the taste to?
4- What did it smell like? Did the smell remind me of anything else?
5- What did it sound like? What was the volume? How did the sound make me feel?

Remember you do not need to include a sensory detail in every single sentence but you do need the reader to be able to "paint a picture" of your writing in their head!
